The Second

‘The Second’ presents a glimpse into the lives of ‘everyday’ gun owners in the US state of Arizona. Talking his way into the living rooms of seemingly ordinary citizens he unearthed a series of images that deliver a haunting message about gun culture in the USA. Amid armouries of semi-automatics, Glocks and rifles – all sitting alongside children’s toys and fine china – he connected to the humans at the centre of this suburban warzone, including senior members of the National Rifle Association, to capture the frightening reality of their relationships with their guns.
The Second Amendment was partially written to ensure that civilian America was sufficiently armed that they could deal with the British invasion should it ever happen, and yet here he was, door-knocking with a British accent asking to enter people’s homes to see their guns, have a chat – and take their photo.
“Sure! Come right on in – would you like some fresh coffee?”
He’s not sure what they all figured a full-scale British invasion would look like, but the irony of the situation was not entirely lost on him. At its core, this series is not a celebration or condemnation of gun ownership, but rather a meditation on the multifaceted nature of gun culture in America. Through these portraits, he endeavours to provoke dialogue and introspection, encouraging viewers to confront their own perspectives and biases surrounding guns and their place in society.
